Sound healers work with the intention of bringing their clients into health, balance and personal well-being. Sound is effective as a healing tool on all levels of the human being: physical, emotional and spiritual.

Sound healing is an ancient healing tradition which has existed for thousands of years in different forms and in many cultures. It has only recently been rediscovered in the western cultures and many of the techniques are taken from tribal healing rituals. It is the use of sound and music as a healing modality which operates on a wide spectrum of illnesses: everything from aiding back pain with sound to exorcising negative spirits through ritual.

Music therapy tends to have a more clinical approach. Sound healing is most often characterized as an aspect of vibrational medicine: the effects of sound upon the auric field. Although the many scientists who have developed machines to treat the ears or ailing organs with frequencies (i.e. Dr. Manners and Cynamtics, Alfred Tomatic and the 'electronic ear') are considered to be sound healers, it is mostly considered to be a vibrational healing art. Some of the techniques consist of the following: toning and sounding, chelation with hands and sound, tuning forks to reharmonize the field, authentic sound and movement, chanting to reach alpha and beta states, techniques of improvisation to find one's own voice.

Composers and musicians can also be considered sound healers. If their intention is to balance and align the listener, then they fit in this category. The musical decisions can be made through a study of known balancing frequencies (i.e. the chakras) or can be done intuitively by watching the effect on the audience.

TRISHA'S WORK AS SOUND-HEALER

I have been working as a sound-healer since 1993. This has taken the following forms:

  1. Private sessions one-to-one with clients for singing lessons (jazz, folk, world music) and healing sessions.
  2. Sound-healing workshops ranging from 6 to 24 people.
  3. Teaching sound-healing techniques weekend workshops at Institute NHC in Montreal.
  4. Directing the 18-member Tamarack Choir which performs community rituals for healing. We perform choral music with the intention of inspiring the audience with interactive songs, chanting and dancing.
  5. Creation of the CD "Songs I Learned From Trees - Prayers for Coming Home"
